The aim of this article is the study of Lisbon from the time its legal boundaries were enlarged in 1903, until the creation of the Lisbon Metropolitan area in August 1991. The making of urban population is the subject of the second part of this text. In this part we emphasise the regional origins of the majority of the Lisbon population. This book was born as a challenge addressed to the Portuguese scholarly community: revisiting the work of historian Miriam Halpern Pereira and develop, discuss, even refute or simply draw inspiration in some of the topics she ever addressed. The outcome is an impressive fresco. Despite the diversity of topics, perspectives and conclusions, the book as whole renovates the discussion about the process of social change and economic development in Portugal during the past 200 years. The guiding thread is a reflection on the directions followed by the Portuguese economy and society, in their successes and their failures, over the past two centuries. This was believed to be the best tribute to Miriam Halpern Pereira, a scholar who became a reference figure of the Portuguese historiography.
